Location in Umalas, north of Kerobokan, only 30 minutes drive from drive from
the airport, and only ten minutes from the restaurant and nightlife center of
Seminyak and Legian, the Banyan Estate is a magnificent newly renovated
property. Named for the ancient and massive Banyan tree that dominates the land
and the buildings, this compound boasts many modern amenities, allowing its
guests to enjoy their Bali vacation in style and comfort.
Within the estate itself, following a style that is very common in Bali, are
six individual structures. Starting from the main entrance after the parking
area and staff quarters, the main house is adjacent to a large sundeck and
swimming pool. Next is the guest house, a gym, and two outdoor bales (Balinese
gazebos). All the buildings are painted in warm earthy colors set off by the
white deck, green grass, thatched roofs and green ivy flowing down from the
second floor of the main house. Terrazzo has been used for all the floors,
leaving them cool to the feet in the tropical heat of Bali. Ceiling fans are
located throughout all the rooms of the property, and all the bedrooms have
air-conditioning. Displayed throughout the grounds of the estate are a variety
of elegant antiques and Balinese statuary.
The first thing guests will notice upon entering the Banyan Estate is the
huge Banyan tree in the middle of the complex that towers above the dining bale.
To the west, lies a small lawn containing tropical flowers and strands of young
bamboo. The property is roughly triangular shaped and bordered on two sides by
high walls, with its longest side next to a small river.
Owing to its large size and detached structures, there are many separate and
distinct areas where guests can congregate in large numbers, or break up into
smaller groups, depending on how the mood strikes them, making the Banyan Estate
eminently suitable for hosting large groups of people and entertaining.
The main house is made up of two floors with a large wrap-around deck on the
second floor, topped by an alang-alang (thatched) roof. At one end of the ground
floor is the dining room with its stately sixteen-seat wooden table that was
custom built for the house. Separated by a wide counter and complete with bar
stools, is a large open-plan western style kitchen with all the modern
amenities. Adjacent, is the living room with a complete audiovisual center, as
well as large couches opening out onto the sundeck.
At the other end of the ground floor is a bedroom with en-suite bathroom. All
these rooms look out onto the large white colored sundeck complete with
deckchairs, hosting a twelve-meter blue tiled, kidney shaped swimming pool, plus
a smaller pool adjacent which contains built-in seats suitable for lounging
while escaping the heat.
Upstairs, there are three distinctive bedrooms. At one end is the master
bedroom with its own marble tiled bathroom and large walk-in closet. This
bedroom opens onto a large wrap-around deck that overlooks the rest of the
estate. Located at the other end of this floor are two other bedrooms, which
share another marble tiled bathroom with walk-in shower. One of the bedrooms has
a private balcony off the front of the house, whilst both can access the large
wrap around deck through a door in the hallway.
Separated from the main house and the pool by approximately fifteen meters is
the guesthouse. It sits beside the river with a small wooden deck on its front
and has an alang-alang roof similar to the main house. Contained within are two
large bedrooms, each with its own en-suite Bali-style (open-air) bathroom.
The gym lies behind the guesthouse and next to the river in its own small
building, again with an alang-alang roof. Running along the front is a wooden
deck overlooking the river. Inside is a large multifunction machine for
weightlifting, along with gym mats and space for other exercise pursuits. A
ping-pong table has recently been installed. In front, and off to one side of
the main house, is the dining bale, containing a wooden antique table and eight
chairs suitable for outdoor entertaining and dining al fresco. Between the
guesthouse and the main house is another bale, a small, covered, raised pavilion
that contains comfortable cushioned daybeds. This is normally used for relaxing
outdoors when trying to avoid the sun, and provides an excellent venue for
receiving massages.
A staff of sixteen is on hand, providing all domestic services and 24-hour
security, to ensure that your stay is a pleasant one. There are three safes
located on the property in which to safeguard guests' valuables.
Banyan Estate represents an interesting mix of Balinese and Western
architectural features, offering a compound that blends into the surrounding
rice fields and tropical flora, while sacrificing none of the modern-day
comforts.
